A doctoral thesis is the most complicated type of academic writing. Graduate students often don’t know what they should do in the first place. However, they have many help options, including consulting their supervisors, joining student study groups, and using the resources of university libraries and writing labs. Either way, it’s a good idea to learn some basic tips and hints about the assignment writing. They include:
You should figure out what you want to study in your paper. If you’re passionate about the subject, you’ll have more fun working on your paper. To get inspired, you might look for sample topics on the Web or visit the library to look at works written by former students.
It should contain a strong thesis statement, explain why a studied problem is important, set goals and objectives of study, and describe your contribution. Some supervisors ask students to prepare an outline and include it in the assignment.
This chapter should include a literature review and explain how previous work relates to your study. You should analyze the existing literature critically and identify opportunities for further research. In this chapter, students also provide definitions of key terms and concepts.
The third chapter of your paper should include the following elements: theoretical approaches, potential solutions, and methods that you’re going to use in order to answer your research question. Make sure that the text continues from the second chapter.
Some doctoral theses don’t have an implementation. However, if your research involves an experimental part, you should describe the experiment in detail by writing a separate chapter.
You should choose your evaluation criteria and justify them clearly. Most students write about efficiency of research methods, compare productiveness of different technologies, and admit strengths and weaknesses of the obtained results.
You should restate the key points of your doctoral thesis. A conclusion summarizes the achievements and impact of your work, states what you’ve found, and highlights questions open for more study.
After the conclusion chapter, you should insert a bibliography page. Remember to credit others for their work, make sure that you distinguish your work from others, and help your readers get pointers to detailed readings.
