Crafting A Perfect Dissertation: Useful Tips For Effective Writing

When you’re working on your dissertation, you don’t want it to just be good. You want it to be perfect; insightful, illuminating, and, most importantly, well-written. But how can you be sure that your thesis will turn out to be the best it can be? As you write, keep three things in mind: time management, division, and reward. These three words hold the key to a perfect dissertation!

• Time management: make a schedule for your writing, and stick to it rigorously. Don’t take days off unless you’re really sick. Plan to spend most of your time writing; at least three days of your week should be eight hours of writing. Plan for one day of the week to be revising and editing, and further research as needed. Treat writing your dissertation like a job, and don’t slack off or deviate from your schedule. The only time you should break your schedule is when inspiration strikes on a day off or in the middle of the night!


• Division: approach your dissertation as hundreds of little paragraphs, instead of as one major paper. Not only is this sure to overwhelm you, it also forces you to think about too much at one time. Think of it as juggling: you can juggle one, two, or three items easily, but add too many and everything falls apart. Work on each segment of your thesis at a time, thinking about the general thesis but focusing all your attention on that section. If you have a paper full of paragraphs that have been meticulously written, and given equal attention, you will have a fantastic paper. A good way to segment your paper is to begin with a detailed outline. Include everything you are planning to say, down to the minutia. Your paper will change as you write it, but having a skeleton in place is a great way to focus on each important detail, one at a time.


• Reward: nothing will put a stop to your thesis like being burned out will. Treat yourself to something nice at the end of every workday, and every week. It doesn’t have to be a huge party; something small to lift your spirits and celebrate another week of work will do just fine. Just make sure that you are always reminding yourself that you’re working hard, and that you deserve something special; this will keep you motivated, bright-eyed, and sharp throughout the entire process!
